Select Board Goals
At a July 30 working meeting, the select board discussed short- and long-term goals with Town Administrator Tom Guerino that included streamlined municipal operations, charter changes, and sweeping infrastructure projects.
Board members and Guerino said that stabilizing marina operations is a priority after a rash of resignations at the beginning of July. “People want to see something happen,” Sheila Lyons, the newest board member, said. Lyons suggested establishing a marina task force separate from the marina advisory committee.
Board chair John Wolf said marina operations were already stabilized. He wanted to see the dredging task force prioritize planning the next round of maintenance dredging in the harbor’s federal channel.
Board members all said they wanted to see progress on plans to relocate the Wellfleet Food Pantry to either the Adult Community Center or the newly purchased Gestalt Center. They also wanted to establish a capital overlay committee, tasked with overseeing a capital needs assessment for town-owned buildings.
The board discussed charter changes that could appear at a special town meeting in the fall. Board members also discussed adding a clause that would give the board the power to remove town committee members.
“We can appoint people, but the select board can never remove anyone,” vice chair Michael DeVasto said.
Member Ryan Curley said he would like to see the hiring of a finance director. Guerino said that establishing the position may also require a charter change. He also suggested finding other ways to add the position, like combining it with the treasurer’s job.
Board members also discussed starting a project to expand a sidewalk along Main Street to the Route 6 intersection and entering a longer-term conversation with the National Park Service about Ocean View Drive and the road’s risk of damage due to coastal erosion. —Sam Pollak
