Special Town Meeting Preview
The Wellfleet Community Forum will discuss the upcoming special town meeting warrant at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 10 at the Wellfleet Adult Community Center. The town meeting is scheduled for June 17 at 6 p.m.
The main item is authorizing the purchase of the Gestalt International Study Center building for town offices. The building, at 1035 Cemetery Road in South Wellfleet, would house the building dept. and the new town planning dept. It would also be used for public meetings. Town Administrator Tom Guerino estimated the cost at $1.7 million, which voters will be asked to authorize as a debt exclusion at a special election on June 18.
The warrant also includes a petitioned article to authorize the use of the old South Wellfleet Fire Station on Route 6 for the Wellfleet Food Pantry, which must vacate its space at Grace Chapel by the end of this year. The number of families using the pantry has risen from 160 in 2020 to 203, volunteer Cindy Batchelder told the select board.
“We are in an urgent situation,” Batchelder said. “We have turned over every rock in Wellfleet.”
Guerino said the old fire station, currently used as a DPW workshop, “doesn’t work that well [for the pantry] from the town’s perspective.” Batchelder proposed as an alternative using space at the Adult Community Center for a new building.
The select board voted unanimously to support the Adult Community Center location for the pantry. Guerino said he is working with town counsel on the viability of the plan. —Sam Pollak
