The Campground’s Future
Maurice’s Campground Working Group members have planned a party at the Off Main Gallery, 75 Commercial St., on Saturday, Oct. 1 to celebrate the votes that authorized the purchase of Maurice’s Campground, said group member Kathleen Nagle. Proceeds of an art sale at the gallery will benefit the Wellfleet Affordable Housing Trust.
Twenty-five residents spent the spring and summer working on the campground purchase. The work paid off when voters approved the $6.5 million purchase and debt exclusion.
“The way we see it, the work has just begun,” said Nagle. “But it is exciting.”
The select board on Sept. 27 created two committees to take on that work, said Chair Ryan Curley. One will begin the master plan for the 21 acres. Town officials want to use the property to create affordable, year-round, and seasonal workforce housing.
A stakeholders’ group will represent concerns and perspectives of neighbors, employers, and campground residents and will oversee its management for the next six years.
Applications to join the committees will be available on the town website soon. The select board will make the appointments, Curley said. —K.C. Myers
