Maurice’s Goes to Town Meeting
Wellfleet voters have a lot to consider, with the possible purchase of Maurice’s Campground on the Sept. 10 special town meeting warrant.
The Wellfleet Community Forum is hosting a pre-town meeting virtual discussion centered on this topic at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Dan Silverman will moderate and Sharon Rule-Agger, who is on the communications subcommittee of the Maurice’s Campground Working Group, will lead an “extended discussion” on the potential $6.5-million purchase of the 73-year-old campground.
If you want to prepare, Rule-Agger’s subcommittee put together a website called wellfleethousing.org that goes into great detail on the financing of the project and the cesspool question that is likely to be front and center in the discussion.
In brief, the board of health is being asked to grant a variance to allow the town to operate the campground for six years without replacing its 35 cesspools with a new system (see story on page A1). Normally, cesspools must be upgraded upon sale of a property. But the select board and other proponents are asking the board of health to waive that requirement while they come up with a master plan for the 21-acre property for affordable, workforce, and seasonal housing.
At 5 p.m. on Sept. 7, the board of health will meet to vote on the waiver. Town officials are working toward a compromise solution that may involve a shorter waiver time limit.
