Trash Terrapin
“Shelly,” a terrapin sculpture on display in the lobby of the Eastham Public Library, is made from part of a 5,000-pound haul of trash picked up earlier this summer by the Eastham Recreation and Beach Dept. and the Eastham Chamber of Commerce. Shelly’s message is “to look towards the future as climate change impacts us, and how we all have a bit of accountability towards our role,” says Library Director Melanie McKenzie. Eastham resident and retired art teacher Kim Walwer guided the kids in creating the trashy tortoise.
The library informs us the word terrapin has its roots in the Native American Algonquian language. According to Mass Audubon, diamondback terrapins are a threatened species in Massachusetts, and Cape Cod is the northernmost extent of their range. —Terry Gallagher
