Conversation Starters
Surveying Seniors
If you are 50 or older, the council on aging wants you to fill out a survey to help the town assess the future needs of older residents. Broad participation in the survey will lead to better planning of a potential community center at the T-Time property, future senior housing, and personnel needs for police, fire, and human services organizations, said Joan Lockhart, chair of the COA board.
So far, of the 5,000 surveys sent to Eastham residents, only 682 have been returned, said Lockhart this week.
The needs assessment is being done in partnership with UMass Boston’s Gerontology Institute. The survey went to all full-time and part-time residents over 50 years old and is also available on the town’s website. Responses must be submitted by July 7, and results are expected to be presented to the public in October.
“Eastham, like many Cape towns, is facing having an increasingly older population,” said Lockhart. Areas of concern include health care, housing, transportation, and programs and services that allow residents to live active, social, and healthy lives as they age, she said. —Isabelle Nobili
