A Wet Windmill Weekend
Windmill Weekend will return, Sept. 9 to 11, after a two-year Covid break. Though the details are not listed yet on the event website, the 45-year-old festival usually includes a parade, a dunk tank, music, food, and vendors selling pottery, jewelry, and crafts.
This year, there could be booze, too.
The select board changed town policy on May 23 to allow alcohol to be served on the Windmill Green, where most of the activities take place. Applicants must get permission from the select board for each specific event. The applicant must comply with standard regulations for other one-day alcohol license holders.
The Windmill Weekend committee has not formally applied yet. But Art Autorino, chair of the select board, said they would like to do so.
“This came up three or four years ago,” said board member Aimee Eckman. “I was in favor of it, and the police chief was in favor of it.” But the rest of the board voted against it.
Board member Jamie Demetri said she was among the naysayers when it last came up.
“There are residents in this town who struggle with substance abuse, and I did hear from them,” she said. But, Demetri added, now she is getting lots of requests from those who favor a wet windmill weekend, and she agreed that “it is good to have options” if the select board can approve applications on a case-by-case basis.
