Financial Report Ahead
After a year-long effort, interim Town Administrator Charles Sumner and interim accountants Lisa Souve and Mary McIsaac planned to discuss findings and recommendations on the town’s finances at the May 24 select board meeting. But by the time the board reached that agenda item it was 11 p.m. No one was left in the audience but a reporter and select board candidate Timothy Sayre.
The topic was set to be addressed on Tuesday, May 31, after the Independent’s deadline. A report will appear next week.
In a press release issued ahead of the presentation, Sumner said his team had reviewed the accounts and achieved a year-end balance as of June 30, 2021. The reconciliations included a review of two years’ worth of available documents, transaction data from the Vadar accounting software system, bank statements, and departmental records.
The team also looked over the conduct of financial operations, provided one-on-one guidance to town officials and employees, and prepared the year-end reports required by the Mass. Dept. of Revenue for setting the tax rate, according to the press release.
Lecount Hollow for All
Lecount Hollow Beach will no longer be residents-only following a May 24 select board vote.
“It made sense during Covid,” said board member Helen Miranda Wilson. She added that, while it was nice for locals to be able to find parking spots in the summer, the town was losing potential revenue by limiting visitor use of that lot.
Board member John Wolf said that visitors are already being asked to pony up more in short-term rental taxes and paying higher gas prices to get to Wellfleet in the first place. “It’s unreasonable to restrict them from using any and all the beaches,” he said. —Michaela Chesin
