Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, May 24 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
It’s kite season on Cape Cod. A birder noted two Mississippi Kites over Eastham on May 18. Then a Swallow-Tailed Kite and 2 Mississippi Kites were photographed over Truro on May 22.
Other uncommon but expected spring migrants, including the Common Nighthawk, Philadelphia Vireo, Summer Tanager, and Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher, were reported in multiple places.
Among the 110 species reported from the Beech Forest in Provincetown in the last week were an adult Red-Headed Woodpecker, a Sora, 2 Black Vultures, a Summer Tanager, a Philadelphia Vireo, a Yellow-Throated Warbler, and 23 other species of warbler.
A Caspian Tern and 8 American Pipits were sighted at Race Point in Provincetown and 2 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels and a Red-Necked Phalarope at Stellwagen Bank.
A Tricolored Heron was seen in North Truro.
