Pickleball Won’t Sour East End
The recreation commission has voted not to turn the rear basketball court at the East End Mildred Greensfelder Playground on Howland Street into a pickleball court.
Brandon Quesnell voted in the minority and Cathy Nagorski abstained. But the majority heeded East Enders who feared the noise would disturb the neighborhood. Those living by the popular pickleball courts at the West End Chelsea Memorial Playground have been complaining passionately about this problem since last summer.
The vote leaves the town in a bit of a pickle. The demand for court space remains, Town Manager Alex Morse told the select board on March 28. The recreation dept. is looking but has not yet found a viable location that is not near homes, Morse said.
This week, town meeting voters approved $100,000 in Community Preservation Funds to be spent resurfacing the tennis courts at Motta Field. The intent was to stripe the new courts for both pickleball and tennis. But Motta Field neighbors are also on the defensive. So, the commission is going to hold meetings to hear their concerns before doing the final striping, Brandon Motta, the recreation dept. director, told the Independent on April 5.
The commission has created a pickleball subcommittee.
No Contested Races
Voters will find no contested races in the May 10 town election. The deadline for nomination papers was March 22, so unless there is a write-in surprise, what you see on the ballot is who you will get for elected officials.
Incumbents Dave Abramson and John Golden are both running again for the select board. Penelope Ann Sutter is running for re-election to the school committee. Newcomer Matthew Richard Gunn is running for the other open seat on the school committee, vacated by Adrianna Stefani. Paul Michael Richardson has returned papers for re-election to the library board of trustees.
Two positions on the charter compliance commission, one for three years and one for a single year, have no candidates, according to the town clerk’s web page. —K.C. Myers
