Prints at Preservation Hall
A show of original prints by members of the Printmakers of Cape Cod will be on view at Wellfleet Preservation Hall, 335 Main St., from Friday, April 1 through April 29. When the Printmakers of Cape Cod was founded in 1976, it had five members. Today, it has more than 50 members from all over the Cape who were invited to submit works using any methods or materials to create this eclectic show. There will be a reception on Friday, April 8, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Mitchell Karas’s Inner Child
Mitchell Karas has a show of colorful assemblages at Spiritus Pizza, 190 Commercial St. in Provincetown, running through April 13. For Karas, who has studied at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, assemblage is a departure from painting that allows him to reconnect with a childlike playfulness and sense of wonder.
The light-up shadow boxes, which contain plastic toys and trinkets, express a fundamental contradiction. While they reflect the pollution of the Earth by the “manmade, mass-produced, and discarded,” they also express “a molecule of joy, whimsy, and nostalgia,” according to the artist’s statement.
Provincetown Theater Announces Season
The 2022 season at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford St., opens with a “re-premiere” of Mae West’s The Drag from May 19 through June 5. The “homosexual comedy” (West’s words) about a closeted newlywed’s double life with a group of Greenwich Village drag queens was shut down by the vice squad in 1927 for “corrupting the morals of youths.”
This will be followed by the world premiere of Sarah Schulman’s The Lady Hamlet from June 27 to July 21. The comedy, about actors vying to be the first female Hamlet on Broadway, is a “cerebral fencing match over the definition of gender,” according to a press release. Late playwright Robert Chesley’s The Jerker, about a romantic relationship between two men in 1980s San Francisco told through the “oft-ridiculed use of phone sex,” will run Aug. 1 through Sept. 1.
The fall will see two Cape Cod premieres: Stephen Karam’s The Humans, Oct. 13 though 30, and Nia Vardalos’s stage adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things, Nov. 17 through Dec. 4. Season subscriptions are $149 at provincetowntheater.org.
Traci Harmon-Hay at Community Center
Traci Harmon-Hay has a show of paintings at the Wellfleet Adult Community Center (formerly Council on Aging), 715 Old King’s Highway, from Monday, April 4 through April 29. Harmon-Hay received her B.F.A. in illustration and painting from the Maryland Institute of Art and studied with Fritz Briggs of the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. Much of her work concerns interactions between humans and nature. She paints with “fluid acrylics on raw canvas, building layers of wash into a final combination of opaque and transparent color,” according to a statement.
