Conversation Starters
New Town Accountant and Treasurer
After months of interim staff working at town hall, new officials have been hired. Cameron Reiss Scott started as town treasurer on March 7, and the select board hired Nick Robertson as accountant during its meeting on March 8. His first day on the job will be April 4.
Scott has been the head account clerk at Barnstable Superior Court since 2013. He oversaw the court’s fiscal operations. Before that, he was assistant manager and bookkeeper for Cape Coast Transportation in Chatham and previously worked remotely as a paralegal for Van De Poel, Levy & Allen of California, according to his resume.
Scott graduated from Brown University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business economics. He is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration from Suffolk University.
Robertson has been the assistant town accountant in Provincetown for the last seven years. While in Provincetown, he took on temporary duties beyond his usual job during periods of employee turnover. At one point during his tenure, there was no finance director or town manager, he stated on his resume.
Before working at Provincetown Town Hall, Robertson was the office manager at Ark Angel Animal Hospital in Wellfleet. He served as executive director of the Provincetown Business Guild from 2009 to 2011. With his wife, Sîan, he ran two shops from 1999 to 2014, Traders Village and id in Provincetown. Robertson has a communications degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Student Enrollment Declines
Student enrollment at Lower Cape schools continues to go down. Over the last 10 years, the student population has decreased 18 percent at Wellfleet Elementary School, 6 percent at Nauset Regional Middle School, 12 percent at Nauset Regional High School, and 2 percent at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, according to the state Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Wellfleet Elementary School has 112 students this year. Nauset Regional Middle School has 533, Nauset High has 833, and Cape Cod Tech has 654 students, according to DESE.
The trend indicates that young people are not staying here. “So, it’s not the greatest thing in the world,” interim Town Administrator Charles Sumner told the select board on Feb. 23. But it is lowering Wellfleet’s education costs by almost $300,000, Sumner said. —Michaela Chesin
