Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Jan. 18 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Yes, the Bell’s Vireo continued at Fort Hill in Eastham this week. Also, Baltimore Orioles have been sighted around town, and a Western Tanager has been visiting an Eastham yard.
A strong northwest wind brought seabirds into Cape Cod Bay on Saturday, and birders at First Encounter Beach in Eastham tallied a Pomarine Jaeger, 6 Atlantic Puffins, 48 Dovekies, 7 Common Murres, 146 Thick-Billed Murres, a Black Guillemot, 355 Black-Legged Kittiwakes, and 165 Northern Gannets.
Short-Eared Owls were reported in North Eastham.
People in Wellfleet reported Baltimore Orioles, as well as 2 Red Crossbills.
One Great Egret was seen in North Truro.
At Race Point in Provincetown sightings this week included a Pacific Loon, 14 Thick-Billed Murres, 12 Common Murres, 4 Dovekies, 750 Razorbills, 12 Iceland Gulls, and a Merlin.
There were also 7 Common Redpolls at Herring Cove.
