Nancy Kelley Boire of Truro and Hudson died peacefully from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Oct. 20, 2021 at the Bridges, a memory-care assisted living facility in Mashpee. Her death was confirmed by her niece, Peggy Dahill. She was 77.
Nancy was born and raised in Truro. She grew up in the house on South Pamet Road that is still in the family, and she loved spending summer days on Ballston Beach. As a teenager, she worked at Howard’s Groceries in Truro Center. Owned by her aunt, Mary Howard, the store provided employment for the whole family.
Nancy attended Provincetown High School, graduating in the Class of 1961. She served as class treasurer and sang in the glee club. She made the honor roll each year. In the class play, Our Gal Sal, she played Allison Vandyne, a character described in The Long Pointer as “a very sensible and determined young girl.” According to niece Peggy, “that’s exactly how Nancy was.”
She attended Salem State University, studying business skills, typing, shorthand, and the like. She longed to return to Truro, and because there were no business teaching jobs at Provincetown High School, she went back to school to be certified in elementary education.
Her first job was teaching third grade at Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Provincetown. She soon met Paul R. Boire, who was a junior high school science teacher in Provincetown. They married and moved to Paul’s hometown, Hudson, where she landed a job teaching business skills at Hudson High School. Some years later, when the business curriculum was phased out, Nancy worked as the manager of the Hudson Municipal Credit Union.
Early in their marriage, Nancy and Paul built a house in Truro where they spent most weekends and summers. “Although Nancy lived in Hudson for 50 years,” said Peggy, “Truro was always home.
In addition to their regular jobs, she and Paul ran their own business, Affordable Tax Preparation, for almost 30 years. They worked from home, preparing some 1,200 tax returns annually. At the end of tax season every year, they would travel somewhere in the world they had never been.
Nancy’s greatest joy was being close to her family at their house in Truro, her favorite place on Earth.
She is survived by her sister, Lucille K. Roza of South Dennis; sisters-in-law Ann Kelley of Truro and Jini Funk of West Harwich; and nieces Peggy Dahill and Sheila Kelley of Eastham and Ann Kelley and husband Pat of Indiana. Also surviving are her great-nephews T.K. Dahill of Eastham and Michael Kelley of Paxton.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jack Kelley of Truro, and by her husband, Paul, who died in September 2019, soon after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
A graveside service was held at Saint Michael’s Cemetery in Hudson on Nov. 15, 2021.
Donations in Nancy’s memory can be made to Hospice Services of Massachusetts, 10 Riverside Dr., Lakeville 02347.
