Announcing the Mary Heaton Vorse Winter Journalism Fellowships at the Provincetown Independent
We are pleased to invite applications for two winter fellowships in Provincetown. These fellowships, one in community reporting and the other in community newspaper leadership, have been made possible through the generous support of the Murray-Reese Foundation and the Provincetown Arts Society. The deadline for applying is November 15, 2021.
The Mary Heaton Vorse Community Reporting Fellowship
Winter 2021-2022
A fellowship designed for superb emerging researchers and writers who want to develop their reporting skills in colleagueship with other reporters and experienced editors. Please apply if you have recently graduated from college or graduate school and have at least two years of experience working in college or community newsrooms.
Three goals:
Community journalism skills: Story assignments selected to build skills in and commitment to the nuts, bolts, and ethics of reporting on the full range of issues that independent newspapers must take on, from government to the environment to writing about the arts.
New approaches to reporting: Exploration of a solutions journalism approach in which writers report on solutions to complement and strengthen the coverage of problems in areas of critical concern to the community — here these include the sustainability of the local economy, access to health care, aging, children’s lives, environment, and LGBTQ issues and rights.
Investigative skills: Fellows will take on one long-form investigative project of special interest to the writer and the local community.
- A full-time, six-month commitment is expected.
- Fellows will receive a stipend of $15,000 for a six-month term.
- Housing will be provided at the historic Mary Heaton Vorse House in Provincetown.
- Candidates must be vaccinated against Covid-19.
Apply to the publisher, Teresa Parker, at [email protected] by sending a resume describing your educational, work/volunteering, and reporting background and an essay describing your trajectory as a reporter so far, your goals, and why this fellowship is of interest to you. (Word limit: 500)
Mary Heaton Vorse Fellowship in Community Journalism Leadership
Winter 2021-2022
A fellowship designed for committed entrepreneurial journalists who want to transform their newspapers or start new ones. Please apply if you are a working journalist with at least five years of experience at a weekly or daily newspaper.
Three goals:
Community journalism: Story and editorial assignments selected to strengthen the impact of place-based reporting. Fellows will also work with the editor to deepen knowledge of the personal, political, and ethical elements of the role — found, for example, in publishing obituaries, handling letters and opinion columns, and writing editorials.
Seeing the big picture: Fellows will experience a six-month immersion in local newspaper management, editorial direction, and strategic planning.
Community involvement: Exposure to the challenges of building community engagement and support and exploration of ways to strengthen the newspaper’s role in creating and sustaining a healthy and democratic society. Fellows will help design and carry out a community education project — depending on the fellows’ strengths and interests, this might include “open newsroom” sessions, workshops on local government and the press, or other approaches.
- A full-time, six-month commitment is expected.
- Fellows will receive a stipend of $20,000 for a six-month term, January to June 2022.
- Housing will be provided at the historic Mary Heaton Vorse House in Provincetown.
- Candidates must be vaccinated against Covid-19.
