Character Study (Thursday, Sept. 30)
The Provincetown Public Library is hosting “Work and Place: A Creative Writing Workshop With Jeff W. Bens” on Thursday, Sept. 30, 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Zoom workshop is open to all levels and types of writers. Discussion will center on developing characters with depth and dimension. Treat Yourself (Thursday, Sept. 30)
The Eastham Historical Society presents a virtual screening of Pastor Samuel Treat: Bringing Eastham to a New Era on Thursday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m. Presented by local historian Thomas Ryan, the film tells how Treat, who was Eastham’s minister for 45 years until his death in 1716, also preached to the indigenous population. Vocal Lessons (Friday, Oct. 1)
Emm Gryner will be singing and reading from her book, The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life, at East End Books Ptown, 389 Commercial St., on Friday, Oct. 1, 5 p.m. In the book, Gryner, who performed with David Bowie, combines memoir with pedagogical guide. Monster Mash (Friday, Oct. 1 & Saturday, Oct. 2)
Director Jonathan Morrill’s latest movie, Johnny in Monsterland: The Director’s Cut, will have its world premiere at Waters Edge Cinema, 237 Commercial St. in Provincetown, on Friday, Oct. 1, 8 p.m., with a reception at 7 p.m. This B-movie mashup set on the Outer Cape features witches, zombies, werewolves, mummies, and Nosferatu. There will also be a matinée on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2 p.m. Tickets are $50 for the premiere, $20 for the matinée at provincetownfilm.org.
Mix and Mingle (Friday, Oct. 1 & Saturday, Oct. 2)
James Jackson Jr. will drop his “Mixtape” at the Post Office Café and Cabaret, 303 Commercial St. in Provincetown, on Friday, Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 2, 9 p.m. An Obie Award winner with over 20 years in cabaret, Jackson brings his humor and soul to songs by Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheridge, Joni Mitchell, and Luther Vandross. Beer, Bratwurst, and Broadway (Saturday, Oct. 2)
Five local breweries will contribute libations to the Cape Cod Museum of Art’s “Oktoberfest” celebration on Saturday, Oct. 2, 4 to 7 p.m. at 60 Hope Lane in Dennis. There will be small bites, raffles, and music by Broadway Central. Tickets are $45 at ccmoa.org.
Paint the Town (Sunday, Oct. 3)
Twenty Summers and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum host “Art in the Barn” on Sunday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hawthorne Barn, 29 Miller Hill Road in Provincetown. Artist John Clayton will lecture on Charles Hawthorne and do a painting demonstration, before turning it over to an afternoon of supervised painting. Coffee and lunch provided. Rags to Riches (Sunday, Oct. 3)
Pianist James Rosenblum will perform “From Joplin to Ravel” at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main St. in South Yarmouth, on Sunday, Oct. 3, 3 p.m. Rosenblum will play rags by Scott Joplin — including his famous “Maple Leaf Rag” — alongside works by Joplin’s contemporary: classical composer Maurice Ravel. Smart as Paint (Monday, Oct.4 – Thursday, Oct. 7)
Valerie Isaacs teaches “Basic Painting,” an outdoor workshop at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, 460 Commercial St., from Monday, Oct. 4 through Thursday, Oct. 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn the basics of composition, light, and mixing color while working in oils, acrylics, or watercolor.
