Edward Scott Carreiro of Provincetown died on Sept. 3, 2021 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after an illness related to his long struggle with diabetes. He was 55.
Scott was born in Hyannis on Oct. 20, 1965, the son of the late Joyce [Crowers] and Gerald Carreiro Sr. He grew up in Provincetown and loved to play hockey as a boy. He was also seen regularly rollerblading through town and playing basketball, and would often spend time with his family at the beach.
He graduated from Provincetown High School and studied culinary arts at Johnson and Wales Institute in Providence, R.I.
After his culinary studies, he worked for more than two decades at his family’s restaurant, Tip for Tops’n, which was loved by generations of tourists and locals for its abundant and reasonably priced fare, especially its breakfast specials. One online reviewer on “Menu-Pix,” upon discovering the restaurant had closed in 2013, wrote, “Tell me it’s not so.”
After the restaurant closed, Scott relocated to Hyannis, where he worked for the Hearth and Kettle. He had a dog named Goldie, which he took everywhere, his brother Gerald reported. Provincetown was his home, however, and he returned to open his own carpet and blind cleaning business.
During his working years, he and long-time partner and friend Molly Benjamin had a son, Coty, whom he loved deeply. Carrying on a family tradition, Gerald said, he would take Coty on fishing trips.
Scott was both passionate and loyal to family and friends. “Whenever someone needed him, he would help,” said Gerald. Scott enjoyed cooking, especially his favorite dessert — Boston cream pie — and often used every pan in the kitchen. Writing poetry, listening to classic rock, and watching football, especially the Dolphins, were among his favorite pastimes.
Of late, he liked going on runs through town and taking photos with his phone camera.
Scott is survived by his son, Coty Carreiro of Provincetown; a brother, Gerald Carreiro Jr. of Wellfleet; and his close friend Molly Benjamin of Provincetown. He also leaves his aunt and godmother, Beverly Ferreira of Provincetown, along with cousins, other family members, and friends.
A Funeral Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown will be held at a date to be announced.
