Dish on Mac’s Tables
In response to a complaint about the use of town land by Mac’s on the Pier, the select board will discuss on Aug. 27 recommendations by the town’s attorney to either charge restaurateur Mac Hay a fee or issue a cease-and-desist order.
For years, Mac’s on the Pier has used the town park south of the restaurant for 14 picnic tables, according to interim Town Administrator Charlie Sumner. The picnic area is open to anyone, Sumner stated, “however, the reality is that customers of the restaurant heavily utilize this area to consume food purchased at the restaurant.”
Hay cleans the park and maintains the picnic tables, but he does not have public bathrooms, so his customers use the restrooms at the town marina. This requires extra septic pumping. The customers also “heavily use” three portable toilets next to the town beach office, Sumner added.
Charter Capt. Kevin Coakley raised the issue at a select board meeting two weeks ago. But the board discussed the tables back in 2019, when they had agreed to consult with town counsel to develop an agreement to “recognize and codify” the practice, Sumner stated. Town Counsel Carolyn Murray at KP Law never received that request back in 2019, Sumner added.
Murray has, however, proposed two options, which the select board will address on Friday.
Hay said he did not wish to comment until after the meeting.
Route 6 and Main St.
The intersection of Main Street and Route 6 — where there were 20 accidents in 2020, according to the Cape Cod Commission — is slated for major reconstruction paid for with $12 million from the Dept. of Transportation (DOT).
The plan includes bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and grass islands separating walkers from motorists. The sizes and configurations of bike, pedestrian, or mixed-use lanes will be discussed at two meetings: the select board’s on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m., where the design engineers, Stantec, will propose various alternatives, and a DOT public hearing on Sept. 22.
Public Can Review Housing Bids
The 95 Lawrence Road Task Force will evaluate three proposals to build 46 units during its next three meetings, on Aug. 26 at 9 a.m.; Aug. 30 at 8 a.m.; and Sept. 1 at 10 a.m.
The task force will evaluate each proposal based on design, environmental friendliness of the projects, proposed income mix of the tenants, and financial strategies proposed by the developers.
