‘America Is Not a Democracy’
To the editor:
In a letter published in the Independent on Jan. 21, Mr. David Bernstein wrote that he will “never again” eat at Arnold’s Lobster & Clam Bar in Eastham because of the owner’s participation in the Trump rally and the march on the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6.
With all the problems for restaurants on the Cape this past year, many of which will never re-open, I will try and support as many as I can, including Arnold’s.
Whether you attend a Trump rally or a Biden rally, you are protected by the Constitution and have a right to be there. You also have the right to go to a parade, a park, or a concert. No one can tell you otherwise.
As for Mr. Bernstein, who suggested that Nick Nickerson, the owner of Arnold’s, hire “a historian to teach him about our democracy,” America is not a democracy but a republic.

‘Local Government Matters’
To the editor:
We have an important local election coming up in Eastham on Tuesday, May 18, and we are lucky to have several talented and committed individuals running.
If you have already voted by mail, thank you. If not, please vote on May 18 for Jamie Demetri for select board, Edgar Miranda for elementary school committee, Patricia Aurigemma for Nauset Regional School Committee, and Willow Shire for library trustee. For housing authority, write in Eileen Morgan.
These races are uncontested, but local government matters. Show you care by voting.
