Guillermo Chang of North Truro died on Jan. 27, 2021 at age 60.
He was born in Havana, Cuba on July 16, 1960. His parents, the late Guillermo and Muy (Yip) Chang, had immigrated from China. As the political climate changed in Cuba, the Changs chose to leave for the U.S, arriving on one of the last airlifts.
After a short time in Florida, the family moved to New York City, where Guillermo excelled in the public schools. He attended the Dalton School on a full scholarship, then graduated from M.I.T. with a degree in chemical engineering. Early in his career he moved into information technology and became an expert on internet security. Guillermo enjoyed his work for IBM for the past several years.
The last eight years of his life were spent in Truro. Guillermo was a board member of the Truro Conservation Trust and a familiar figure walking his dog, Bella, on the beach and chatting with his fellow dog walkers. He loved clamming, collecting oysters, kayaking, and socializing with the many friends he made on the Outer Cape. He especially loved spending time with his wife in the home they had lovingly renovated for their retirement.
“He was quiet and unassuming,” said conservation trust president Fred Gaechter. “We will miss him and his gentle but highly competent ways.”
Guillermo is survived by his wife of 32 years, Annmarie (Barrett) Chang. He was a kind and caring father to his daughter, Elizabeth Chang. He also leaves his in-laws, Ann and John Barrett of Concord; brothers-in-law Robert Barrett and wife Eliane Barrett of Chelmsford and John Barrett and wife Sue Gifford Barrett of Bolton; sisters-in law Irene Barrett of Boxborough and Janie Barrett and husband David Westcott of Concord; and his nieces Jennifer Mitchell, Samantha Duarte, and Amelia Ludwick, and nephews Billy Barrett, Benjamin Ludwick, and Lucas Barrett.
A celebration of Guillermo’s life will occur at a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Guillermo’s memory to the Truro Conservation Trust (truroconservationtrust.org) or to CapeAbilities of Cape Cod (capeabilities.org).
