Covid-19 Update
As of Nov. 5, Eastham had four active coronavirus cases reported within the previous 14 days, 17 cases considered recovered, and no deaths.
Woke to Wakes
The select board voted at its Nov. 2 meeting to pursue placing a revised personal watercraft and no wake zone bylaw on the 2021 annual town meeting warrant.
“It would address reducing user conflicts both at the landing and in the marsh,” said conservation agent Shana Brogan. “It would also give the town the ability to enforce the local regulations.
The personal watercraft bylaw revision would apply to things like jet skis, and it would keep them more out into the Cape Cod Bay area, as opposed to going up into some of the tidal creeks.”
Select board vice chair Aimee Eckman suggested the no wake zone be expanded to include the area from the end of Cable Creek out to the mooring area.
“Because that is really getting narrow now, near the end before you get to the mooring area,” said Eckman. “I’m seeing a lot of boats flying around. It’s getting quite dangerous out there, not just for the kayakers and paddleboarders.”
Under the current draft, fines would be set at $300. “When we start to enforce it, we would have to do a campaign of education and warnings before issuing tickets,” said Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe.
A public meeting will be scheduled prior to holding a select board hearing on finalized drafts. —Linda Culhane
