Covid-19 Update
As of Nov. 3, Truro had two active cases of Covid-19, 16 cases that are considered resolved, and no deaths.
Seniors Can Get Tax Break
Elderly or disabled full-time residents of Truro can get a break on their real estate taxes if they earn no more than $40,000 a year, or $50,000 if married.
Funds to help needy seniors come from voluntary taxpayer contributions made on real estate tax forms, according to Jennifer Shannon of the Truro Taxation Aid Committee.
Applications can be obtained from town hall, on the Truro town website, or from the Council on Aging. COA staff will provide assistance for those who need help filling them out.
Applications will be reviewed in a confidential manner, Shannon stated.
To qualify, an applicant must own and occupy real estate in Truro as a primary resident. An applicant must be the titled owner of the property or hold a life estate in the property. The applicant must also have resided in the home and held title to the taxed property a full calendar year prior to the submission deadline.
Applicants must be elderly or disabled. “Elderly” is defined as a person who is at least 65. “Disabled” is defined as a person who is not able to work due to illness or accident and who is currently receiving disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, SSI, or Medicaid, Veterans Administration, Workers Compensation, or any other such program or agency providing financial assistance due to the disability.
The deadline to submit the application is Dec. 29, 2020.
