25 Mph on 20 Roads
The select board voted unanimously on July 12 to amend the town’s traffic rules and regulations and on July 19 adopted new speed limits, establishing 25 mile-per-hour zones on 20 public roads.
The slower speeds will go into effect as soon as signs are posted on Main Street, East Commercial Street, Commercial Street, Kendrick Avenue, Railroad Avenue, Bank Street, Whit’s Lane, Briar Lane, Mill Hill Road, School Street, Lawrence Road, Long Pond Road, Lt. Island Road, Cahoon Hollow Road, King Philip Road, Indian Neck Road, Nauset Road, Lecount Hollow Road, Pleasant Point Road, and Pond Avenue.
Both Jay Norton, the DPW director, and Police Chief Michael Hurley had voiced support for the amendment. Norton said multiple strategies should be employed to encourage people to follow the new speed limits.
“One of the struggles with enforcement, especially at this time of year, is we just have a constant turnover in town,” Hurley said. Officers working to educate the public have to “keep starting over,” as each wave of visitors arrives. —Emma Madgic
