Nauset Light Beach Blues
Summer will come and go without the popular Nauset Light Beach parking lot ever fully opening.
Delays due to labor and supply chain challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic have temporarily halted construction of the new bathhouse at the Cape Cod National Seashore beach in North Eastham, said Seashore Supt. Brian Carlstrom. Two-thirds of the beach parking area will remain closed until the late fall or winter.
The loss of 60 spaces in the 90-spot lot has been frustrating for Eastham residents and visitors alike. Tempers get even hotter when people are confronted with the Seashore’s policy preventing drop-offs at the beach. There are police at the parking lot to enforce it, Carlstrom said.
“I have a stack of complaints on my desk,” he said.
But, he said, the lot is crowded already. The added combination of more pedestrians and vehicles would make it too unsafe, he said.
The $2.9-million bathhouse construction project that ground to a complete halt two weeks ago will be underway again after Labor Day. Until then, beachgoers better decide early if they want to get to Nauset Light Beach. The parking lot, even with all the spaces open, usually fills by 10 a.m., Carlstrom said. —K.C. Myers
