The Local Journalism Project
The Independent is not just a local newspaper. We are a group of practical idealists, working to rebuild local journalism. This is something we believe is essential to democracy. To succeed, we need to do more than produce a good newspaper. That’s why we started the Local Journalism Project, a nonprofit organization with an educational mission.
One of the Local Journalism Project’s goals is to teach the principles and practice of community reporting to the next generation of journalists. Inspired by the model of Report for America, the Local Journalism Project supports fellows and reporters in their first two years in the field. Their stories are featured on this page.
